Star joins the Pedal On UK cause and urges ceased cyclists to to get their bikes out of mothballs

Downton Abbey’s Mr Carson gets on his bike

Jim Carter, star of the hugely popular Downton Abbey, is the latest celebrity to get behind Pedal On UK – a 1,000 mile UK-wide cycle tour and series of community festivals designed to keep the spirit of London 2012 alive.

Organised by Sustrans and backed by the Big Lottery Fund, the initiative started on August 16th and runs until September 7th. Pedal on UK marks the successes of 84 new walking and cycling routes which help over four million people to travel around their communities on foot or by bike.

Carter, who plays Mr Carson in Downton, took part in the St Neots to Bedford ride, starting at the Riverside park and accompanied by a group of volunteer cyclists.

Carter said: “The hardest part of riding a bike is getting it out of the shed! The minute I’m on my bike and start pedalling – the world suddenly seems a much better place. I would urge anyone who has been thinking of getting their bikes out of mothballs to pump up their tyres and join in. You are guaranteed to feel better afterwards. I promise.”

Pedal On UK will now continue around the country and set in motion celebratory events in cities and towns including Birmingham, Belfast, Newcastle and Glasgow.
