Native Dutch people cycle more and for further than immigrants – to truly integrate into Dutch society it’s important to be able to cycle. Mama Agatha is a new documentary following a community leader in Amsterdam who teaches immigrant women how to cycle. The short film will be shown at film festivals in York and Cambridge later this year, with the film makers eager to book other venues, too.

Directed by Palestinian film-maker Fadi Hindash the 15-minute documentary follows a group of culturally diverse women in the south of Amsterdam as they are taught now how to cycle. Overseeing their journey into society is a mother-figure known as Mama Agatha.

The film is a about “integration, the spirit of community and the exhilarating freedom of riding a bicycle,” say the film makers.

Mama Agatha will be shown at the Cambridge Film Festival in September at 9.00pm and York’s Aesthetica Short Film Festival in November. The film will also be available for online streaming through various platforms, including Vimeo on Demand, starting from early summer 2016.
