London Mayor Boris Johnson this morning opened the first two cycle highways in the Capital.

The two pilot routes, which will officially open in May 2010, run from both South Wimbledon to Bank and Barking to Tower Hill.

Twelve super cycle highways are planned in total, all of which are set to be ready for London 2012. Each route covers between ten to 15 kilometers.

The mayor, who made news yesterday by falling in a Lewisham river, said: ‘I'm not kidding when I say that I'm militant about cycling, and these superhighways are central to the cycling revolution I'm determined to bring about.

‘No longer will pedal power have to dance and dodge around petrol power - on these routes the bicycle will dominate and that will be clear to all others using them.’

The Mayor was recently shaken while scouting for highway routes on his bike with advisors by an incident involving a large truck.
