Cyclist Alan Curtis, 56, has been awarded £70,000 in damages following an incident where a pothole cause him to flip over the bars, resulting in serious injury.

Curtis's solicitor Kevin O'Sullivan spoke after the decision, stating that he believed the 'floodgates are now open' for similar claims should councils fail in their duty to properly maintain roads.

The High Court heard that Mr. Curtis has not cycled since the accident and now suffers short-term memory loss problems, having fractured his skull in the accident.

“I’m quite pleased. I have always said I never came into this for the money, and I didn’t expect to win a life-changing amount," said Curtis, outside court.

“But the more I thought about it, and the more I realised I have got permanent injuries that I will have for the rest of my life, I just felt that someone ought to be held to account. In that sense, justice has been done.”
