Four cyclists in line for 'sporting Oscars'

Six-times Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong and Dutch road and track queen Leontien Zijlaard-van Moorsel were today nominated for the Laureus World Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year awards. Race Face rider Darren 'Bear Claw' Berrecloth has been nominated to receive the Best Alternative Sportsperson of the Year Award, as has Norwegian MTBer Gunn-Rita Dahle.
Publish date:

Will Armstrong be bested by tennis sensation Roger Federer and van Moorsel be beaten by Kelly Holmes?

We'll find out on May 16th. An awards presentation evening will be held in Estoril, Portugal.

The Laureus World Sportsman of the Year award is judged by 500 journalists from 82 countries.

Armstrong won the top award in 2003 and was judged 'comeback of the year' in 2000.

Berrecloth, one of Outside Magazine’s 'World’s 25 Coolest People' in 2004, joins past nominees Shaun White, Laird Hamilton, Tara Dakides, and past winners Dean Potter and Shaun Palmer.

Also nominated in the Best Alternative Sportsperson category this year are Norwegian mountain bike racer Gunn-Rita Dahle, American wakeborder Dallas Friday, South African explorer Mike Horn, British solo sailor Ellen MacArthur, and American freeskier and BASE jumper Shane McConkey.
