France’s cycle market drops in volume

Commuter market share grows, e-bikes sales up, but components and accessories drop in value
Publish date:

Turnover in the 2012 French cycle market hit €1,280 in 2010, according to the latest report from the CNPC (Conseil National des Professions du Cycle) – a national organisation joining manufacturers, distributors and ‘builders’ of cycles, components and equipment.

3,031,300 bikes were sold in 2010 in France, a drop of -3.5 per cent in volume compared with 2009.

Aftermarket sales of components and accessories dropped by four per cent in value to €486m.

According to Bike Europe, the drop was the third in a row for France, which is – in terms of value – the fourth largest European market after Germany, the Netherlands and the UK.

Urban/commuter bikes represent 27 per cent of total bike sales (a rise from just 17 per cent in 2000). E-bike sales grew to 38,000 e-bikes in 2010, compared with 23,700 in 2009.

Specialist dealers represent 51.5 per cent of the total sales value in the French cycle market, with sports chains at 38.5 per cent. Mass merchants take up ten per cent of the total sales value in France.
