The world's biggest high-end bike maker is to get even bigger in 2011.

Giant expands in China

According to the Chinese Economic News Service, Giant Manufacturing Co. of Taiwan is spending $36m building its new bicycle factory in Kunshan, the ninth of its factories in the Jiangsu Province of China. This will be operational in the third quarter of 2011 and churn out one million bicycles a year two years later. 

Giant has also set up a new production line in Kunshan for high-end composite frames. This new line will become operational in the second quarter of 2011 and achieve maximum annual output of 200,000 frames within three years. 

Fellow Taiwanese bike company Merida is also in growth mode. The company has invested NT$250 million since August 2010 into capacity expansion by procuring new production equipment and improving production lines in its factories in Taiwan and China. The expansion is to be completed by April next year.
