Going to the O2? Why not take your bike...by cable car

Thames cable car crossing was built with bikes in mind, says Transport for London
Publish date:

Emirates Air Line – the London cable car system connecting the Royal Docks and Greenwich Peninsula – has been running since June 2012, but did you know you can take your bicycle?

Since it opened ahead of last year's Olympics, punters have been able to take their bikes across, but Transport for London fears the cycle community haven't been aware that bikes are welcome and have been designed into the cable cars from the start.

In each cabin four people can be seated whilst two bikes are fastened – the seats lift up and a belt is available to secure the bikes. According to the spokesperson BikeBiz heard from, bikes can be taken for no extra charge (there are a range of tickets for adults, ranging from £4.30 and £1.60) and there are no restrictions as to when a bike can be carried - unlike on many mainline train services.

The cable cars stetch over the Thames linking to the O2 Arena and to London Bike Show and Prudential Ride London Show venue ExCeL.

It's encouraging that the Emirates Air Line is making bicycles welcome, but will bike carriage be factored into other new transport networks designed for the capital and beyond?
