Government’s energy efficiency programme backs cycling

A new travel handbook from the Energy Efficiency Best Practice Programme features cycling. Unusually, instead of being tucked away as a footnote, the cycling information is nearly as in-depth as the information on efficient fleet management and travel by bus

‘The Road to More Efficient Transport’ devotes a page to cycling, suggesting readers get the following publications for further reading:

Travel plans - New business opportunities for service providers to cyclists and walkers (GIR 74) and, from the National Cycling Forum, Cycling Works! (CYCLE01) And Cycling to Work (CYCLE02).

All the publications are downloadble in PDF format from the EEBPP’s website.

GIR74 is aimed at getting bicycle retailers and suppliers to link in with travel plans of local big businesses.

The publication says: “Travel Plans usually contain measures designed to promote cycling and walking, consequently they provide opportunities for businesses such as cycle shops and associated equipment manufacturers. [This] report describes the scope of travel plans and provides suggestions about potential business opportunities that arise from their introduction.”

GIR74 lists the fact that Stockley Park and Southampton Hospital have both liased with IBDs to arrange discounts for employees. This, says GIR74, leads to:

“Increased market size…wider general promotion…higher local profile.

“Your business is likely to gain financially if you are able to provide products or services related to cycling…to organisations implementing travel plans.”

‘The Road to More Efficient Transport’ is a loose-leaf, A5 publication and is being sent to transport and human resource managers in big businesses and organizations.

It is available free by calling 0800 585794.
