Graeme Obree rescued in hanging attempt

If a farmer's daughter had not checked a barn on a remote farm in Ayreshire, the world of cycling would have lost the maverick champion, famous for his 'superman-bike', banned by the UCI and parts of which were cannibalised from a washing machine. He tried to kill himself before Christmas and a Scottish newspaper has broken the news today

According to The Daily Record, former world champion cyclist Graeme Obree was found unconscious at Bellsland Farm in Kilmaurs, Ayrshire, and taken to Crosshouse Hospital in Kilmarnock.

The 36-year-old father of two was discovered in a farm building by chance.

Obree broke the world one-hour distance record in Norway in 1993 on a bike with a bearing salvaged from a washing machine.

His brother Gordon died in a car crash in Scotland in October 1994 and Obree has been suffering from clinical depression for the past three years.

Today's Daily Record leads on the story and contains graphic accounts of the hanging attempt.
