Grassroots cycling facing 'crisis'?

UK Sport's head of performance, Peter Keen, says H&S restrictions and the cost of policing events are damaging cycle sport

UK Sport's head of performance, Peter Keen has told The Telegraph that he believes the cost of policing race events, combined with increasingly stingent health and safety regulations, is forcing race organisers to frequently cancel events, effectively putting grassroots cycling in 'crisis'.

"The tradition for a century is that you can race on open roads so long as you can marshal effectively, stay the right side of the line and obey the rules of the highway, with acknowledgement and support from the police," said Keen.

"That is now getting harder to do because traffic levels are higher and there is greater willingness to enforce the health and safety perspective on all of this. It means the sport faces a real crisis."
