Guardian columnist slams Asda's 'cheapest bike'

Helen Pidd, contributor to the Guardian's new cycling blog and tester of Asda's 'cheapest bike in the UK' has slammed the supermarket, stating that "cheap bikes can put you off cycling."

Pidd's blog, which can be read here, gives plenty of reasons why the £70 bike is a must avoid, including comment from her local bike shop – Two Wheels Good – who state that they see several a week and that the repairs often total the value of the bike.

Among the columnists reasons to avoid the bike, Pidd notes that the ladies bike has a men's saddle, a 'Shimano knock off' brand handles the gearing and the cheap plastic components will simply fall apart.
