Work to resurface the Herne Hill Velodrome begun as scheduled on July 18th and a re-opening target date has now been revealed as September 3rd.
The track, previously home stomping ground of Bradley Wiggins, had fallen into such a state of disrepair that the site had been earmarked for redevelopment. Luckily, thanks to cash from British Cycling’s Whole Sport Fund, combined with other generous donations, the track will now once again become one of South London’s key cycling venues.
According to the velodrome’s website: "There is still plenty of work to do: approximately four meters will be dug into the grass, to allow for an extended safety run-off area. Then that will need to be surfaced. The track is being laid with a specialized mix of very fine “MasterTrack” Tarmac. Finally the new, bespoke track fence will be installed."
