Injuries galore as IBDs throw themselves around Bootleg canyon

It's Saturday, a busy day for US IBDs. But that didn't stop them flocking to Interbike's second Outdoor Demo day at Boulder City, close to Lake Mead and Hoover Dam. As well as the latest bikes, expo visitors could try out different pedal systems (Pearl Izumi supplied the shoes, Crank Brothers the cleats), helmets, hydration packs and - very important, this - sports sunscreen. But the fantastic routes at Bootleg led to lots of crashes: IBD Andy Stevenson of the Lake District got bad gravel burns on one fall, while journo Guy Kesteven is to visit the show proper in a wheelchair...

One of the mountain bike patrollers buzzing the desert MTB course said he'd run out of medical supplies on the first day of the Outdoor Demo, and that the second day was already more bloody than the first.

It must have been the excitement of being able to ride so many top-end bikes (the Santa Cruz VP-Free was probably the most sought after ride of the two days) in such a short space of time. Stand by one of the bombholes, wait a few minutes and then see an IBD staffer crash and burn. saw lots of gravel burns and a live popping of a clavicle. The heli-ambulance and local paramedics were kept very busy.

"We should stage something like this at our trade shows," said Fisher's commercial director, Richard Allmark. He meant the test-riding, not the injury-fest...

Lots of injuries were evident on the first day of the trade show in Las Vegas, including the popped knee of journalist Guy Kesteven. He pranged on his last run on Saturday and, as can be seen from the pic below, is scooting around Interbike in a wheelchair.
