In the same town where A&J Manufacturing is churning out mass-market Taiwanese bikes from the former British Eagle factory, Bikedirect Europe will offer the bespoke manufacturing of cro-mo frames made from Reynolds, Columbus and Dedacciai steel tubing.
Italian bike building machinery already owned by New Zealander Frank Clavis of Bikedirect Europe and Corratec UK is being shipped from New Zealand. As well as Europe, Bikedirect will supply Australasia with be-spoke bikes.
Bikedirects operations manager is Phil Roe, formerly of Townsend/British Eagle/Falcon, and the Lotus bike programme.
There is a longing for the traditional English custom-made crafted touring/road bike, says Frank Clavis.
The big brands have fallen to easily-produced, soulless extruded variations of bone-jarring aluminium and in recognition of the problem carbon forks first appeared to soften the front end, and now they are putting carbon back-ends on. Yet other than a full carbon bike, or at the exreme end a titanium bike, steel still gives the best response and feel and most importantly longevity.
It is the only medium that allows the input of individualism, different style of lugs, backends, fork crowns and so on. Its labour intensive but satisfying. We have some old trade people to fall back on who can handle a brazing torch. This is something the big boys cannot do now.
As well as Bikedirect Europe and the 57 model Corratec range of bikes, Corratec UK imports the ZYYZX range of components, tyres and clothing. ZYYZX is available to all IBDs, not just Corratec stockists. Corratec UK has a B2B and B2C website, www.corratec.co.uk, where trade price lists can be downloaded.
