Kids pedal for mince pies

School children celebrate Christmas by cycling with Bike It
Publish date:

Starting today, children from eleven schools in Colchester will take to their bikes as part of Sustran’s series of ‘Mince Pie Pedals’.

Running from December 6th to 13th, 500 children are expected to take part in celebrating Christmas by cycle, with a mince pie treat for their efforts. Kathleen’s Kitchen, on Long Wyre Street Colchester, will be baking the mince pies for the occasion.

Sustrans has been working with Colchester schools since October 2009 through the Bike It scheme, when around seven per cent of children at the schools cycled regularly. Now, some of the school see 11 to 15 per cent of children cycle regularly each week.

“Colchester Bike It schools are so full of enthusiasm and drive when it comes to encouraging children to cycle to school,” praised Bike It officer Aba Pifferi. “Since the beginning of term they have been offering a number of pro-cycling activities: Dr Bike sessions, Be Bright and Be Seen day, family rides, Learn to Cycle courses and now the Mince Pie Pedal…a perfect festive way to end 2010.”

In partnership with Essex County Council, Sustrans works with 16 schools in Colchester.
