The LCC has welcomed London mayor Sadiq Khan’s accelerated plans for a new green river crossing in East London (read our full report here), which will dramatically change the way pedestrians and cyclists access the city.

Plans for the new bridge outline an essential route linking Rotherhithe and Canary Wharf, which will prioritise cyclists and promote greener transport within the city.

LCC’s Ashok Sinha commented on the new plans: “The mayor’s announcement of greener river crossings for cycling and walking is great news. We’re particularly excited to see plans for a Rotherhithe to Canary Wharf cycle-walking bridge progressing.

“These crossings will help keep London moving as its population grows – without adding to congestion or pollution. The bridge will make life easier for people who wish to add more physical activity into their daily lives.”

Despite the strong support for the new river crossing, the London Cycling Campaign also remarked that it remains opposed to the Silvertown Tunnel proposal, plans for which were also outlined in Sadiq Khan’s announcement.

The company cited “deep concerns” around the functionality of the new tunnel, predicting that it will lead to an increase in motor vehicle use, and therefore put more stress on both congestion and pollution levels.

Sinah said: “Judging by the list of measures to make Silvertown Tunnel ‘greener’ announced by the mayor, the plans have not changed radically enough to make them ‘green’ or good for London. Instead, they are likely to result in more congestion and pollution.”
