London confirmed as cycling boom-town

The number of cycle journeys made in London has increased by 67 percent during the past five years, reveal figures released yesterday by Transport for London.
Publish date:

From May 2000 to May 2005 the number of weekly cycle journeys on TfL's roads rose from 60 000 to more than 101 000. Part of the growth can be attributed to London's £5 congestion charge, soon to rise to £8.

Peter Hendy, MD of Surface Transport, TfL, said: "These new figures show that TfL's work to make cycling safer and more convenient is having a real impact."

During Bike Week, Trafalgar Square will be the venue for the second annual cycling festival, BikeFest in the Square, on Sunday 12th June.

This TfL event will provide guided bike rides around central London; theatre performances on bikes; a bicycle try out area; an art workshop for children to create accessories and badges; and a "style show." There will also be a Dr. Bike clinic.
