London to stage Tour de France start in 2007

London's mayor, Ken Livingstone, had wanted the world-famous race spinning past Buck House and other top sites in 2006 but this was deemed too early by ASO's Jean-Marie Leblanc, organiser of Le Tour. The Independent newspaper reports that Livingstone and Leblanc have now met to thrash out details...

Alasdair Fotheringham reports in The Independent that Leblanc said: "This is the first time we will see each other in person rather than simply exchanging letters. There is considerable interest in having the prologue of the Tour in the city centre of London.

"We would consider it a majestic, spectacular event to start the Tour with, and it is one which we would feel honours the English and honours the race."

The Tour de France was last in the UK in 1994.
