While there may just be a handful of British manufacturers in the UK cycle trade compared to the nation's industrial heyday, a ‘Made in Britain’ marque has been launched for use in marketing campaigns, on labels and on websites, reports The Drum.

Backed by a number of MPs, British kitchen manufacturer Stoves is leading the campaign to encourage use of the mark.

Cynthia Lee from Nottingham University designed the logo after winning a competition of over 100 entries.

“We have been overwhelmed by the response to the Made in Britain campaign so far, with widespread interest, a mention in the House of Commons and many other UK manufactures showing their support, there is clearly an appetite out there for standard marque,” said Stoves chief exec Denver Hewlett.

“We think that this logo really captures the essence of the campaign and will proudly be displaying it on our website and marketing material and encouraging other UK manufacturers to do the same.”

Member of Parliament for South Staffordshire Gavin Williamson is backing the campaign.

He said: ‘The research that Stoves has carried out provides us with compelling evidence of the strength of consumer demand for a Made in Britain seal of approval and I think it is time this issue is raised by the Government.

“I am delighted to be able to support Stoves in their campaign because I believe a Made in Britain marque is a great way to highlight what Britain does best and it is high time that we showed how proud we are of our British businesses.”

Cains Beer, Imperial Bathrooms and ScreenTek have agreed to use the logo.

Brompton and Pashley are among the best known UK bicycle manufacturers.
