Magicalia ups the ante

With 3500 forum postings a week, is a busy place. Owner Magicalia has just secured its next level of VC funding and – in VC language – is seeking to leverage its brand. To this end a full time sales executive has been hired to sell advertising and sponsorship deals
Publish date: is claimed to be the UK's largest cycling website. It is certainly the best funded.

And it’s growing at 6 percent a month. Its bi-weekly newsletter goes out to 18 542 cyclists. 20 percent of its members claim they never read any cycling magazines so is one of their sole sources of bike-related info.

With committed, enthusiast readers, believes it’s in a good position to make money from online advertising. The site doesn’t sell anything and its business model owes more to magazine publishing than e-tailing.

To up the site’s revenue Alex Hammond has been appointed as full time sales exec. Hammond spent the previous 14 months working for an e-mail marketing company who specialised in electronic B2B marketing.

One of his first sales tasks will be to sell the £900 sponsorship package for bikemagic’s emailed newsletter.
