Marketing director gives up the booze, turns to cycling

Sustrans has appointed a new director to increase the levels of cycling on the National Cycle Network. She's Shirley Acreman and has left Ballantine's Scotch to, hic, work for the cycle route construction charity

Acreman becomes the director of marketing and information, a newly created post.

She was previously Global Marketing Director for Allied Domecq in charge of the Ballantine's Scotch brand and has worked in marketing for 18 years.

As well as having a PhD in ecology she's a touring cyclist. She and her husband cycle 2500 miles a year. Together they are keen supporters of British Cycling, CTC, Veteran Cycle Club, LVRC as well as Sustrans.

Acreman said: "The mood is ripe for a shift in behaviour away from the car. Pressures of modern life mean most of us are increasingly time-starved, yet we spend hours each week sitting in traffic jams going nowhere. If a journey is under 2 miles in

urban traffic, the chances are it will often be quicker by bicycle or walking. Even short distances, done regularly, will make you fitter, help lose a few pounds in weight, not to mention the saving in parking and gym fees.

"By working with other organisations to create facilities for cycling and walking, Sustrans is bringing enormous benefits not only to the people who use them, but for everyone by helping to get things moving and reduce overall levels of pollution."
