Mayday, mayday!

The Outdoor Industries Association has joined other outdoor organisations pressing for greater opening of the rights-of-way network in the run up to the May Day holiday weekend
Publish date:

Co-ordinated by the Ramblers'Association and supported by, among others the British Mountaineering Council and the YHA, a joint statement has been formulated which welcomes the endeavours of those local authorities which succeeded in opening some parts of their rights of way network in time for Easter.

However, with the bulk of trails in England and Wales still closed, the

public perception is that - thanks to FMD - the countryside remains off-limits and the

signatories therefore:

remind all local authorities of the recent veterinary advice from MAFF and

the National Assembly for Wales;

call upon them to make more effort and open the vast majority of their path

network and access land in time for the May Day Bank holiday;

ask authorities to publicise as widely as possible the extent to which

rights of way and access land are open - since walkers, cyclists, riders and

other recreational users are extremely unlikely to visit without this

Perhaps the BA, the ACT, the BCF and CTC would like to add their voices to this campaign? All of the outdoor recreational bodies should be pulling as one...
