Cycle training organisation BikeRight has been awarded a £1.2 million contract to handle BikeAbility training across Merseyside.

The three year contract, the first since Cycling England's demise, will be run in collaboration with Merseyside Transport Partnership's Travelwise campaign, focusing its efforts on year five and six pupils.

Commenting on the announcement, Liz Clarke, MD said: “Fantastic news for us, it’s a bit like going back to my roots as my mother grew up in Bootle, and played in the Liverpool Philharmonic for a while. We are really looking forward to working with the MTP partners on the Bikeability contract as well as a number of other cycling initiatives across Merseyside.”

BikeRight is now looking to open an office in the area, bringing on local instructors to deliver the training. Adult cycle training and maintenance lessons may also feature in the Merseyside program.

Neil Scales, Chair of MTP, says: “Since Bikeability was introduced in 2006, almost 50,000 children have been through the scheme in Merseyside. By partnering with BikeRight! we can ensure that this national standard of cycle training will continue to be available to children across the area.”
