MET police choose BikeRegister as preferred tagging system

Selectamark online registration brand chosen by London's police force

BikeRegister has been chosen as the preferential supplier of bike tagging equipment to the MET police.

The Selectamark brand has been chosen to continue the force's efforts to security mark bikes in the city, with 12,000 said to have been tagged last year alone. The latest home office figures show the capital suffered 45,000 bike thefts last year, however theft to April 2011 is reported to have dipped five per cent year on year.

BikeRegister told BikeBiz that the MET's decison to appoint BikeRegister as its preferred supplier was down to the fact the firm's system is easily recognisable without needing any specialist equipment. This makes on the spot action against thieves a lot easier for officers.

Other reasons were the fact that BikeRegister’s database has the Insurance and Police approved LPS 1224: Issue 3 accreditation, ensuring that customer data is not used for other purposes, and also that the BikeRegister system allows Police to uniquely mark bikes with a permanent security mark which cannot be removed.

Chief Superintendent Sultan Taylor, Cycle Task Force, MPS Safer Transport Command said: “The Cycle Task Force encourages the 3Rs: registration, record and report. By cyclists ensuring they have their bikes marked there is an improved chance that their bikes if stolen will be recovered and returned to them and the suspect brought to justice.”
