At 10.30am this morning John Spellar MP, Minister for Transport, announced the formation of the BPSA which will formulate new standards for cycle parking stands. There are ten founder members of the BPSA, with a potential for many hundreds of local authority members.

Peter Gazey of Bikerail is the BPSA’s secretary and Tony Zuppinger is the chairman. Annual membership for a manufacturer/supplier is £250 and carries full voting rights. Local authorities and other agencies pay £100 but have no voting rights.

Gazey believes another 30 or so manufacturer/suppliers of cycle parking equipment could be potential members. The Department of Transport and the Local Regions (DTLR) will be promoting the BPSA.

John Spellar MP, Minister for Transport, said at the London launch of the BPS:

"We believe that British suppliers will rise to the challenge for their products to be endorsed by the BPSA. Endorsement should level the playing field and help prevent substandard products from entering the marketplace. It will give purchasers confidence in buying a secure product that will benefit their users."

Chairman Tony Zuppinger said:

"The Bike Parking and Security Association aims to build on the strengthes of its members’ knowledge and products. This will provide local authorities and other purchasers with the confidence they need in providing users with secure means of parking their bicycles.

"We want to make these standards widely available, and also discourage products that cannot meet users’ expectations.

"The BPSA will be working hard on this during the next year. These standards are only the first step. I am confident that secure and warranted parking will encourage more people to cycle."
