'More investment in cycling must follow Tour de France success'

Sustrans says funding created right conditions for Bradley Wiggins' historic win, and money can do the same for everyday cycling
Publish date:

With cycling's profile pushed ever higher in the national consciousness following Bradley Wiggins' achievement in the Tour de France, Sustrans has called for more investment in cycling.

The sustainable transport charity paid tribute to Wiggins and Froome, spelling out the potential influence on younger generations and noting how money has made a difference in professional cycling.

"Congratulations from all at Sustrans to Bradley Wiggins and Chris Froome on their amazing achievements in the Tour de France," enthused Sustrans' chief executive Malcolm Shepherd.

"This incredible achievement will make Bradley and Chris role models to our kids for years to come, helping to inspire a new generation of cyclists.

"It's vital that our streets are safe and welcoming for children to ride their bikes and parents to join them – slower speed limits in residential areas would make a massive difference.

"Investment in professional cycling has paid off – with cycling getting more and more popular we need to see much more funding for safe options for everyone."
