New figures have revealed that bicycle use is higher than car use in Amsterdam, according to this report in Bike Europe.
From 2005 to 2007, bicycles were used by the city’s population an average of 0.87 times a day, while cars were used an average of 0.84 times a day.
Compared with 1990, car trips fell across the city by 14 per cent, while bicycle trips rose within the city’s ring road by 36 per cent. The centre of the city saw the highest use of bicycles, reported to be due to car park restrictions first introduced in the 1990s.
Car movements in 1990 registered approximately 235,000, and fell to 172,000 by 2006.
