Move over Black Friday, bring on #SmallBusinessSaturday

Independent retailers claim their own initiative (and hashtag) to boost business in the run up to Christmas
Publish date:

While a small minority have, frankly, shamed themselves for the most recent 'Black Friday', a (hopefully) more refined alternative is taking place this weekend.

Small Business Saturday takes place on Saturday December 6th and has, of course, been designed to encourage consumers to visit family businesses, local shops, small manufacturers and the like on the day.

Businesses can get involved by heading to the UK site and downloading packs, posters and more to help them make the most of the initiative, which originally started in the US. Shops can run events and discounts to capitalise on the day, as well as teaming up with fellow local shops.

If you're looking for inspiration head to Twitter and the #SmallBusinessSaturday hashtag. And The Guardian has four case studies for further ideas.

But please, no fisticuffs in the aisles for Small Business Saturday.
