MP's #cyclesafe debate sparks 'local cycle chief' speculation

Could all UK cities get their own cycle tsar?
Publish date:

Following yesterday's #cyclesafe Parliamentary debate, calls have been made for every city to have its own head of cycling, reports The Times (on its front page this morning).

Transport Minister Norman Baker gave his support to the concept of a cycling commissioner for every city in the UK, but added the decision would ultimately be in the hands of local authorities.

The cycle chief would be responsible for ensuring measures for improving safety on roads had a voice at local decision making levels.

The calls for city cycle commissioners may remind some of the cycling towns and cities project that took place in the UK between 2005 and 2011 (phase I from '05 to '08, Phase II ran until 2011). In those government funded projects local authorities often appointed cycle project managers or cycle officers. 17 towns and cities took part in the project.
