Shimano's Tim Gerrits has been elected chair of the bicycle wheel committee of the World Federation of Sporting Goods Industry, WFSGI. Paul Lew, pictured, director of technology and innovation at Reynolds Cycling of Salt Lake City, becomes the vice-chair.

The committee is made up of twenty-four members of the bike industry. It advises, administers, and regulates policy as a partner with the Union Cycliste Internationale. Lew will serve a multi-year term.

"I'm looking forward to continuing my work with the committee as its vice-chair," said Lew, who is a three year member of the group.

"I hope to lead discussions about improving the UCI test protocols, re-evaluate the current test procedures, propose new regulations that close loopholes and improve safety for cyclists who compete in UCI-sanctioned events."

Lew, who joined Reynolds Cycling in 2007, pioneered the first production carbon clincher bicycle wheel. He holds over thirty US and international patents related to mechanical and aerodynamic design.

The WFSGI is an independent association formed by sports and sports-inspired leisure brands, manufacturers, suppliers, retailers, national/regional federations, industry and trade associations and sporting goods industry related businesses.

The WFSGI bicycle wheel committee was formed in 2012 with the primary goal of negotiating wheel standards for UCI-sanctioned competition in all disciplines of cycling.
