Norman Baker opens Brompton Dock at Manchester Piccadilly station

Transport chief opens the latest of many docks set to appear throughout UK's larger stations
Publish date:

Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Transport, Norman Baker MP has this morning launched a Brompton dock and hire scheme at Manchester's Piccadilly Station.

The scheme enables the storage of up to 40 Brompton bikes in a single car parking space. Fully-automated, this ‘smart’ cycle hire scheme offers an end-to-end transport solution in which the bike integrates into the existing network of trains, tubes and buses. The Docks can be relocated, or scaled up or down, with minimal fuss and, according to Brompton, very low costs compared with any alternative cycle hire scheme.

14 locations are planned to open in the near future, with confirmed sites at Manchester, Oxford, Bristol, Southampton and Exeter.

Guildford station saw the UK's first ever Brompton Bike Dock open last summer.

According to sales and marketing director Emerson Roberts: "Brompton Dock Ltd is a sister company of Brompton Bicycle Ltd, created to address the clear need we saw for a hire scheme that was cheaper to install and run, more economical to use, did not depend on state subsidies, and was more flexible and less intrusive at the point of installation."
