Bank confirms it will continue to sponsor cycling weekend into 2012

Northern Rock sticks with Cyclone

Northern Rock will remain main sponsor of the Northern Rock Cyclone next year.

The success of the 2011 event – which attracted top British cyclists – was cited as a key factor behind the decision.

This year’s event was the fifth Northern Rock Cyclone. Almost 5,000 participants took part with the event playing host to the UK National Road Racing Championships.

“The Northern Rock Cyclone is a fantastic event that is enjoyed by so many people,” enthused Andy Tate, customer and commercial director at Northern Rock. “The fact that it is held here in our region makes it even more special and we are proud to announce our intention to continue our sponsorship of the Cyclone in 2012.

“This year’s event has attracted some of cycling’s biggest names and it has a real national focus, which also makes the Cyclone an attractive event for us to sponsor on a commercial basis. We look forward to working with Peter Harrison and his team towards another excellent event in the region in 2012.”

Mark Cavendish, Bradley Wiggins, Geraint Thomas, Lizzie Armistead and Nicole Cooke were among the top names taking part in 2011.

Event organiser Peter Harrison commented: “I am delighted that Northern Rock has signalled its intention to continue as main sponsor for the Cyclone in 2012. We have come along way together since the Cyclone began in 2006 and it is great to already have the prospect of them being on board again as sponsor for next year.

“The Company is extremely proud of its North East roots and I know that we will continue to work well together to make the 2012 Cyclone the best cycling weekend in the UK calendar, once again.”
