Velodrome is first venue to be completed for London 2012

Olympic Velodrome opens today

The Olympic Park construction is almost 80 per cent complete – over a year ahead of the London 2012 Games.

The Velodrome is the first permanent sporting venue on the Park to be completed and handed over to the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG).

The Olympic Park’s Olympic Stadium is structurally complete, with all spectator seat installed’ lighting towers in place and running track to be installed later this year.

The Velodrome opening has garnered plenty of column inches from the national media, including BBC.co.uk, which has a number of images from the newly completed Velodrome here.

The Daily Telegraph reported that the Manchester Veldrome would remain the home of British Cycling, according to Dave Brailsford.

ODA Chairman John Armitt said: “The ‘big build’ of the main Olympic Park venues is on track to complete this summer as planned, ready for test events ahead of the Games. It has transformed a former industrial area into a great new park with world-class sports venues and a new network of roads, bridges and infrastructure built for the Games.”
