One in eight bikes in Holland are electric

E-bike market quadruples over three years
Publish date:

GfK figures have revealed the extent of the growing electric bike market in Holland, with one in every eight bike sold in the territory reported as being electric in 2009 (as reported by Bike Europe).

Between 2006 and 2009 the e-bike market quadrupled from 40,000 units to 153,000 in the territory.

E-bikes are reportedly three times more expensive than 'normal' bikes on average.

Mirroring the cycle market in Germany, the e-bike sector buoyed the bike industry in Holland, which overall saw a drop in the number of bikes sold. Higher electric bike prices meant sales increased by 2.6 per cent last year to €930 million, despite unit sales dropping below 1.3 million.

According to the report, e-bike sales accounted for one third of the turnover of the entire cycle market at retail in 2009. The previous year, e-bike sales accounted for a quarter.
