In 1946, two friends returned to Bradford from the trenches of Europe.
Having discovered a love for bicycles during their time in Italy, Whitaker and Mapplebeck opened their shop doors for the first time that July.
Now trading as Pennine Cycles, they are celebrating their 70th anniversary. Whitaker and Mapplebeck Limited is one of the oldest bike shops in the West Yorkshire region. For two years running, they have been presented with the Bradford Means Business Award for retail, hospitality and leisure. Priding themselves on ensuring their customers have the right bike, they sell world-class brands and manufacture the Pennine bike on their premises in Bradford.
Pennine Cycles are launching a commemorative book to highlight their history since 1946, and will also be hosting a summer party to mark this year. Managing Director Paul Corcoran commented that customers "are always our key focus – they benefit from our passion, experience, and expertise when it comes to cycling. We are proud to be part of the community and continue to sponsor local cycling club V.C.Bradford.
"2016 is an exciting year for us. We have lots coming to mark our 70th-anniversary celebrations later in the year."
