People who buy used bikes ride and spend more, says Gluskin Townley

US bicycle market researchers hold American Bicycling Consumer Research study

US cycle market researchers The Gluskin Townley Group believe that second hand bike buyers cycle and spend more in local shops than buyers of new bikes.

According to the marketing and research consultancy duo, one half of which regularly comes to the UK to give seminars at Icebike, used bike buyers actually tend to be wealthier, with 22 per cent of used bike owners coming form houses with incomes of over $200,000. This is compared to 12.5 per cent on that level income who purchased a new bike.

The full report is yet to be published, though Elliot Gluskin says the research will provide the industry with information that will be 'actionable'.

Gluskin did, however, tell US trade website Bicycle Retailer: "A finding of immediate interest is 64 percent of owners of used bicycles are planning to purchase a new bicycle in 2012, (and) spend a median of $1,000, which is more than owners of new bicycles plan to spend."
