With a rock path and a rope bridge to test out the all-terrain capabilities of boots, a water purification test area, a dark room for trying out torches, a 20m indoor climbing wall and a Gore-tex rain chamber for checking the weatherproofness of shell layers, the new Graham Tiso Outdoor Experience store planned for Glasgow is going to offer an impressively interactive shopping experience.
This kind of retail theatre with hands-on product demonstrations doesnt come cheap but can boost sales bigtime. The Leith Outdoor Experience has been a critical and commercial success, say retail pundits.
Shops of all sorts are going to have to follow suit in the future, and become more touchy-feely if they are to prosper in a retail landscape soon to be dominated by e-tail and Wal-mart.
The new Graham Tiso store in Glasgow all 1865 sq m of it and due to open in April will be sublet to other retailers. As well as a cycle section, Graham Tisos CEO, Chris Tiso (the son of the founder), says he wants to sublet to a travel agent, a bookseller and a cafe so his store becomes a multi-draw destination store.
