Roads minister handed industry-funded #space4cycling document

Minister for Roads Robert Goodwill handed Cyclenation-organised, Bike Hub funded document 'Making Space for Cycling.'
Publish date:

Following his speech opening CycleCityExpo in Leeds, Minister for Roads Robert Goodwill was handed a copy of 'Making Space for Cycling' by the Bicycle Association's Phillip Darnton. The document is hot off the press, delivered to the show, which is taking place today and tomorrow in Leeds City Hall. 'Making Space for Cycling' was enabled by the Bike Hub levy fund. The document was organised by Cyclenation, the federation of local cycling campaign groups.

The guide describes ways to achieve higher levels of cycling, especially for new developments and when redesigning streets, to create family-friendly health environments, productive employees and profitable shops, relaxed public spaces and attractive streetscapes, and efficient use of space.

The guide has been endorsed by many leading cycling groups include British Cycling, CTC, Cycling Embassy of Great Britain, London Cycling Campaign, Cambridge Cycling Campaign, and the Campaign to Protect Rural England.

Martin Key of British Cycling said: "Two-thirds of people want to cycle more if it is made safer and easier to do so. Designing the needs of cycling in at the early stage of development, as this guide explains, gives people a real choice of how they get around.”

Roger Geffen of CTC said: "Encouraging more people to cycle is a great way to create a healthy and attractive environment, for people and businesses alike. This guide provides excellent advice on how to do so, providing huge benefits for the local economy and our overall quality of life.”

Mark Treasure of Cycling Embassy of Great Britain said: "This is the most ambitious attempt at outlining best practice in the UK that we have seen, and a huge step forward from the current guidance."

The magazine is available as a PDF on the 'Making Space for Cycling' website.
