Scottish Parliament sees debate on cycling

Cycling Scotland hails cross-party support and consensus on boosting cycling in #cycledebate
Publish date:

This morning (Thursday March 29th) saw Scottish Parliament discuss cycling in detail, focusing on increasing safety and encouraging more of the nation's residents to get in the saddle.

The debate comes weeks after Westminster held a similarly-themed debate on cycling, prompted by cycle advocate pressure and The Times' #cyclesafe campaign.

Cycling Scotland welcomed the attention MSPs had given to the topic.

“Cycling Scotland was delighted to see an in-depth discussion take place in Parliament today covering all of the issues of how we make cycling safer and more popular as a country," said chief executive Ian Aitken.

"The debate showed there is cross party support for encouraging more people to cycle and a good consensus on what needs to be done to achieve that. We support the calls made by MSPs today to provide better infrastructure for cyclists, more speed restrictions and 20mph zones and increased delivery of Bikeability Scotland cycle training for young people, delivered on-road.

"As part of the report Cycling Scotland will present to Transport Scotland in June on the progress of the Cycling Action Plan for Scotland, we will be providing options on how to speed up the progress towards as many children as possible receiving Bikeability Scotland training in an on road environment."

#cycledebate is the Twitter hashtag for the debate.
