Scottish tourism companies are being urged to gear up to take advantage of a predicted 30 percent growth in mountain biking in Scotland over the next five years.

Tourism Intelligence Scotland said MTBing generates £119m a year for the Scottish economy (which actually seems pretty low given the number of world-class bike events staged in Scotland) and market share is predicted to increase to £155m in the next five years. TIS is a joint venture by Scottish Enterprise, Highlands and Islands Enterprise and VisitScotland.

The organisation has produced a new guide on mountain biking tourism which offers intelligence on the sector as well as advice on how to cater for cyclists' needs.

The guide is available as a PDF download to businesses registered in Scotland.

'Mountain Biking: Tourism in Scotland' suggests that hotels and B&Bs should stock basic bicycle repair items, and offer secure bike racks and cleaning facilities.

Scottish Enterprise said 1.3 million visits are made to Scotland each year for mountain biking, nearly 600,000 of which were to MTB trail centres.
