Six million new cyclists to hit the roads this spring

A whopping six million new cyclists are expected to take to the roads this spring, according to new research from Cyclescheme.co.uk.

According to the cycle to work provider, one in ten plan to change their commute to work, with two million people planning to cycle to work for the first time. Cyclescheme is urging the nation to ‘spring clean their commute’ next week and take advantage of the cycle to work initiative.

The call follows the most successful year in history for the Cycle to Work Alliance – a network of cycling charities, businesses and organisations dedicated to getting more people cycling.

Cyclescheme’s research found that fed up commuters blamed an array of frustrations with public transport, from trivial inconveniences to more serious issues. Half admitted to being frequently late for meetings due to public transport, whilst one in twenty have been pickpocketed on their way to work. With overcrowding continuing to be a common cause for complaint, a quarter have had a passengers’ armpit in their face, whilst a third have smelt a stranger’s morning breath.

One in ten Brits plan to change their journey to work in some way this spring, which is the optimum time to try a new activity, according to psychologist Dr Anjula Mutanda. Research shows three in four people plan to make a ‘spring resolution’ this year, rather than in the traditional New Years period.

Dr Mutanda explained: “Spring signals nature’s new start and we aren’t immune from it. The physiological affect on mood as well as positive associations with spring as a time of renewal make us want to engage in something new.

“Spring, on the other hand, is perfect for new goals like cycling to work, because there is greater synchronicity between our physical environment and our psychological mindset.”

Next week, Cyclescheme is urging the nation to harness the power of the spring and ‘#SpringCleanYourCommute’, by trying out cycling to work. People all over the UK will be showing their support by swapping cycling gloves for a pair of marigolds, the classic spring cleaning accessory, the firm said.

Cyclescheme.co.uk spokesperson James Borley said: “Never mind spring cleaning your home, 2014 is all about spring cleaning your commute! Join the millions taking up cycling this spring and don’t forget you can get your bike, your safety gear and stylish clothing at a massive 25 per cent to 42 per cent discount if you make use of tax breaks through Cyclescheme.”
