Skoda comes full circle and produces bikes again

They're all at it. Car manufacturers that is. Bikes. They like making bikes. CSA, owner of Peugeot and Renault is no doubt going to start selling Peugeot bikes through its car dealerships. BMW has got a range of shiny bikes. Porsche has a rather meaty monster of a DH machine. And Ferrari bikes, just like the cars, are real headturners. But how successful will Skoda be with their bicycle?

Skoda was started in 1895 by Vaclav Klement and Vaclav Laurin in what was to become the Czech Republic. Trading by the name Laurin & Klement, they and their four workers manufactured and repaired bicycles.

The company soon started to produce motorcycles too, and by 1904 had started production of three wheel cars.

The rest, as they say, is history.

But Skoda cars were long thought of as jokes in the West and it wasn't until the company was absorbed into the Volkswagen family that the quality started to improve, and the jokes started to wear thin.

Now Skoda is to introduce a mountain bike. The Skoda Vision One has 27 gears, full suspension and disc brakes. It will be released in Germany next month.
