The citizens of Coulsdon are being asked to dust off any vintage bikes they may have stored in a garage or shed to take part in a bicycle ride to celebrate 125 years of local cycle culture on St George’s Day.

Electric bike showroom Cycling Made Easy recently made a chance discovery that its Couldson site was used from 1891 as a meeting place for cyclists. Staff at the showroom decided it was worth celebrating this long tradition of cycling with a commemorative ride this month.

“Lots of people will have old bikes in a shed or garage," said Ray Wookey, director of Cycling Made Easy. "We’ve seen bikes come into the showroom which have been in continuous use over decades so we know there must be some classics out there. It’s time to rescue them and give these wonderful machines a new lease of life.

“On display at the showroom, is a bike built in Croydon by Leader. It would be lovely to see if we can find more of these and see them ride on the road. However, what we would really like to see is an old penny farthing. If anyone could find one for us, we’d like them to get in touch.”
