Sports Minister Hugh Robertson backs huge Cyclopark project

MP to help Kent-based facility to be a part of the UK's Olympic legacy

Hugh Robertson, Minister for Sport and the Olympics, visited the Cyclopark-build-in-progress near Gravesend on Friday.

The Cyclopark project, set for completion in 2012, is set in 43 hectares of parkland and when complete will incorportate a 340m BMX racetrack, a skate park and a 2.9km circuit track for cycling and running. Olympic gold medallist Jamie Staff MBE hopes to develop a 'Jamie Staff Academy' on-site for youngsters looking to develop their talents.

Hugh Robertson MP visited the park to officially mark the start of wok on the site.

Robertson said: “Cyclopark is going to be a huge draw for Kent and the wider South East and I’m delighted to officially mark the beginning of its construction.

"It is vital that we provide the facilities for local people to enjoy sport and keep fit and healthy. With the Olympics taking place in the year that Cyclopark is due to open, 2012 looks set to be an incredible year for sport; not only in London but throughout the South East.”
