Sram has debuted a new 1x road groupset at its headquarters in California, which is set to land in stocks as soon as this summer.

The new single ring system is an extension of two of its earlier groupsets Rival and Force, now offering a single ring setup for both, paired with either mechanical or hydraulic disc brakes.

Replacing last year's CS1 cyclocross groupset, Force 1 will suit the adventure touring rider, offering a large expansion on prior ratios.

Rival 1 is on the other hand completely from the ground up new and comes in at a more competitive price, according to Sram.

Sram’s X-SYNC single chainring now extends its range from 38 to 54 teeth. The manufacturer says that when paired to Sram’s wide or super-wide cassettes, and managed by Sram’s dedicated clutch rear derailleurs, 1x ratios allow riders to push gearing comparable to that of double (2x) chainring systems.

Sram’s cassette lineup now features a 10-42 (requires XD driver body), 11-36, 11-32, and 11-30.

Chainrings

Essential to the development of 1x are the expanded chainrings options, which now extend from 38 to 54. Each is based around the X-sync platform, with tall squared teeth engaging the chain earlier.

Derailleurs

SRAM’s new 1x rear derailleurs have adopted all the same technologies from MTB, but in a road specific package, including the addition of a barrel adjuster. The new long cage version is capable of managing the chain across SRAM’s super-wide 10-42 and 11-36 cassettes.

Braking

Along with the existing mechanical brake system, Sram has also included HydroR options with 1x. HydroR, or hydraulic road, is the promise of better braking with more power, better modulation, and less hand effort.

Stock is expected with the UK distributors Raleigh and Fisher Outdoors in around four weeks time.
