Sustainable transport charity has called for the urgent creation of safe routes to railway stations in the UK.

The plea follows the Department for Transport’s announcement of the creation of 10,000 extra cycle parking spaces at UK train stations – set to cost £14 million. Sustrans said that while the investment is welcome, safe routes to stations must be urgently created to make cycling a real travel choice for the public.

Sustrans' policy manager Jason Torrance told BikeBiz: "Government investment to transform facilities for cyclists at rail stations is a welcome commitment but will have a limited effect unless safe and attractive conditions are created to enable cyclists to get to and from rail stations.

"Government must encourage and incentivise local authorities to build on the momentum created by this investment and create safe routes to stations as a part of their upcoming local transport plans."
