By Emilee Shaw

Sustrans is inviting people to mark the one year countdown for London’s 2012 games by walking or cycling to the Olympic Park on July 23rd 2011.

Participants can either join in a five and a half mile walk from the Tower of London, five and a half mile cycle from Tottenham Hale train station or an 11 mile cycle from Thames barrier, with all participants arriving at the Olympic Park by 2pm.

Transport for London has developed Olympic Greenways, which are routes for walkers and cyclists to and around the Olympic venues. Transport for London are hoping this will ‘encourage people to travel more actively in the run up to and during the Olympic Games.

Sustrans’ Rebecca Davis said: “London 2012 is a great opportunity to inspire people living in the London or visiting the city to be more active, both as part of their involvement in the Games and in their everyday lives.”

“Our walk and rides to the Olympic Park mark the one-year countdown to the start of the Games and will introduce people to the Olympic Greenways, Which offer a safer and more pleasant way of travelling on foot and by bike.”

"People have already begun coming forward as champions and we are welcoming contact from anyone and everyone who wants to get involved in this. You don’t need any special skills, just desire to make a positive and long-lasting difference to the lives of those around you.”
