Sustrans has announced the completion of a five-year project to extend London's National Cycle Network, adding some 36km of infrastructure.

The project, part-funded by a £50million award made to Sustrans by the Big Lottery Fund in 2007 and other organisations, including the TfL Greenways programme, has added improved road crossings, created bridges, upgraded existing paths and developed a traffic-free space on West Green Road in Haringey

The focus of the regeneration has taken place in Croydon, Westminster, Haringey, Southwark, Islington, Havering and the Tower Hamlets.

German Dector-Vega, London Director at Sustrans said: “This ground-breaking work has shown us how much public appetite and excitement there is for safe walking and cycling routes in the capital – we talk to people every day who can’t wait to get out on their bikes in their neighbourhood.

“As fuel prices rise and many of us struggle to find the time to be active, Sustrans will continue to make it easier for everyone to make cheaper and healthier journeys.”
