Ynys Mon’s former railway line is in line to be regenerated as a new cycling and walking route in part of a £2 million investment.

The new path would run from Gaerwen and Amlwch along the disused Amlwch railway, stretching 16 miles. The route would be used for walkers, cyclists and horse riders.

The news follows the Welsh Assembly's announcement of its ambitious four-year cycling plan, unveiled last month.

Sustrans hopes the path could be open by 2012, and is negotiating with landowners alongside Network Rail and Anglesey Central Railway.

“The development of Lein Amlwch would provide an ideal location for local people to walk and cycle in a traffic free environment which would benefit the health of the communities,” said Sustrans area manager for North Wales Glyn Evans.

“The route would also result in more daytrippers and holidaymakers heading into the north of the island, which will give a real economic boost to Ynys Mon.
